Jonathan Djanogly, the Member of Parliament for the Huntingdon Constituency, yesterday demanded on the floor of the Commons that the Chancellor come clean on revealing to the public how much taxes will need to be raised to cover the Government's spending black hole.
Mr Djanogly said:
"The fact remains that all independent experts now acknowledge that the Government have committed themselves to spending more than the amount that they are likely to raise in taxes.
People must be made aware that the almost inevitable consequence will be a significant increase in taxation. Personally, I support reform of public services and am opposed to the further tax increases which will be necessary to support their plans. However, if the Government thinks that increased taxation is justifiable to fund their spending plans, why can they not be honest and say so?
I was pleased that the Shadow Chancellor, Oliver Letwin MP, supported my position. With the Labour and Liberal parties both supporting more tax, this will be an important election issue in Huntingdonshire as elsewhere."
