Local MP secures new funding to combat flooding in Alconbury

Jonathan Djanogly, Member of Parliament for the Huntingdon Constituency, has helped secure and warmly welcomed £12,000 of new funding which has been allocated to the Alconbury Flood Alleviation Scheme Stage Two for 2023/24.

This allocation forms part of the Government’s £100 million Frequently Flooded Allowance announced by the Environment Secretary last month, and it targets communities where ten or more properties have flooded twice or more in the last ten years.

These communities, such as the one in Alconbury, are often smaller and can face barriers to access funding due to the relative complexity and cost of building flood defences compared to the size of the community.

Commenting on the new funding, Jonathan said:

“I know only too well the devastating impact flooding has had on the local community in the recent past.

“Smaller communities such as Alconbury’s have too often been overlooked for proper flood protection, and that is why I made securing new, targeted funding a priority.

“The £12,000 allocated as part of the Frequently Flooded Allowance is therefore a welcome announcement. More needs to be done however, and I will continue working with all stakeholders both locally and nationally to ensure the right protections are put in place for local households.”

Also commenting, Environment Minister Rebecca Pow said:

“We know only too well the devastating impact that flooding can have on communities and businesses, as we face more extreme weather brought about by climate change.

“I am determined that we do whatever we can to prevent flooding that affects so many towns and villages across the country.

“This much-needed funding will go a long way to support those whose homes and livelihoods are repeatedly threatened by flooding, and forms a key part of our record £5.2 billion investment by 2027 to protect communities in England better.”
