Local MP opposes new Combined Authority tax rise

Jonathan Djanogly, MP for Huntingdon, has today spoken out against the decision taken by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority to introduce a new council tax charge in the form of a mayoral precept.

Beginning this year, the new charge will add £12 to council tax bills for residents across the local area, including in Huntingdon, St. Neots, St. Ives and the surrounding villages, and comes at a time of increased financial pressure on household incomes amid high levels of inflation and the rising cost of living.

Commenting on the new charge, Jonathan said:

“It is not right or fair that hardworking residents across Huntingdonshire will have their council tax bills pushed up even further due the serious political and administrative shortcomings of the Combined Authority.

“If it goes ahead, the rise will have far-reaching consequences, and this is especially the case now given the financial challenges faced by many of my constituents. The Mayor must reconsider its introduction not least because, as a number of Board Members have pointed out, it is simply not needed, nor will it bring any tangible benefit to many of those who will be forced to pay.”
