It has been a great start to the campaign, walking down Huntingdon High Street with lots of supporters. The sun came out and I enjoyed hearing what people had to say. One very prominent issue was what are we going to do for pensioners? Our proposals to restore the link between the state pensions and earnings and to raise the basic state pension went down very well. Also popular was our proposal to end the scandal of elderly people having to sell their homes to pay for residential care. Our two year Council Tax freeze was also a well-liked policy idea. Older people deserve dignity and security in their old age. Many feel that the benefits system works in favour of people who did not save – this needs to change. In the evening we canvassed in Eynesbury. There certainly seems to be many people who are unhappy at the decision of the Liberal Democrats on the Town Council to use the funds from Eynesbury Hardwicke to subsidise the rest of the town!
