Following his receipt, earlier this month, of vague replies from the Minister of Transport on the question of the A14 proposals' timing and funding, Jonathan Djanogly, the Member of Parliament for the Huntingdon Constituency, requested further clarification on three issues:

• Firstly, whether, upon the Highways Agency completing its prepatory work on the A14 proposals, the scheme would be entered into the Department of Transport's targeted programme of improvements. The response from the Government is still vague. They have now said that if it is decided that the project should be given the go-ahead (which is by no means certain) then it will be included 'with a view to an early entry'.
• The Minister has clarified that my request, for confirmation of the new A14 bypass will be contemporaneous with the remainder of the works to the A14 road, is something that can only be considered when the plans are more advanced.
• Finally, the Government has confirmed that, in the event of approval, the scheme will be funded from the resources made available under the Government's 10-year plan for transport. Of course, this does assume that there will still be adequate and unallocated funds at that time - which considering this Government's transport record to date is not something we can take for granted!

As matters progress on the design of the road and the public transport system, I will continue to press Government on the more basic questions being - When is Government going to approve this project, how long is it going to take and will they pay for it?"
