MPs put through their paces in the ring to promote boxing

10th December 2012

Jonathan Djanogly joined other MPs and took to the ring at Fitzroy Boxing Club, near the House of Commons, at a ‘boxing taster session’ organised by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Boxing.

The session was to introduce MPs to the work of amateur boxing clubs and highlight the social benefits of boxing. The visit was the beginning of a 'twinning' of Parliament with Fitzroy Lodge Boxing Club, which is situated within minutes of the House of Commons. MPs who attended with Jonathan are Kate Hoey, MP for Vauxhall, where Fitzroy Lodge is situated, John Cryer MP, Charlotte Leslie MP, Phillip Lee MP and David TC Davies MP.

Jonathan Djanogly said:

" It was great to visit the Fitzroy Club and meet with the very dedicated staff and trainers, as well as some of the athletes who train there.

Amateur boxing is a sport that we, the UK, are really good at; as shown by our remarkable haul of golds at the Olympic Games.

In visiting the gym we also hoped to continue to shine a light on boxing and its impact on young people. Clubs like Fitzroy Lodge and the clubs in my own constituency in Huntingdonshire really do change lives and communities, but are often struggling and need all the support they can get. We aim to show policy makers that boxing clubs are often as close as you'll get to a silver bullet in tackling youth crime and behaviour that can lead to rioting. Boxing provides focus to the lives of young people, who might otherwise be distracted, it stops them taking drugs, keeps them off the streets and requires a good diet and level of fitness. Resources channelled here could hardly be better spent.”
