MP concerned at proposals to close Huntingdonshire Regional College St Neots campus

14th March 2012

Over the last week, I have been in touch with a number of constituents, Councillors and local stakeholders in connection with the proposals to close the Huntingdonshire Regional College St Neots campus. This issue is causing widespread concern, a concern which I share.

I can understand that HRC would want to review their current facilities, and I agree that the Almond Road campus does need investment to make it an attractive and appealing learning environment. However, I cannot see that losing the only Further Education facility in St Neots, which is the largest town in the County, is in the best interests of St Neots residents or of local education in the wider sense.

With the planned growth for St Neots over the next 20 years in mind, there should be greater opportunities to expand education provision in the town, rather than reduce it. I hope that HRC will consider representations from local Councillors, residents and those enrolled on courses in St Neots before a final decision is made.

I do also think that more effort needs to go into considering St Neots’ requirements for vocational training both now and in future years, and how this ought to be shared between local schools and Huntingdonshire Regional College – with the intention that local resources are put to best use.
