Jonathan Djanogly MP makes the case for local businesses with Tourism Minister

26th January 2012

Jonathan Djanogly recently made representations to the Tourism Minister John Penrose MP on the Government’s support for tourism and hospitality businesses in Huntingdonshire.

The Government has introduced a series of measures to boost the hospitality and tourism industries and the Minister explained how these would impact directly on jobs in Huntingdonshire.

John Penrose MP said:

“From abolishing red tape through to skills training for hospitality workers the Government is determined to do what we can to help this incredibly important sector. And with London 2012, the Cultural Olympiad and Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee all happening this year we have a once in a lifetime opportunity that I hope tourism businesses and their staff across the country will make the most of.”

Jonathan Djanogly MP said:

“I’m glad that the Government is prioritising the tourism industry as it plays such a vital part in our local economy. 7.8% of residents in my constituency are employed in this sector so it was good to have the opportunity to make their case directly to the Minister. The plans to capitalise on the Games next year should generate 60,000 jobs across the country. I want to make sure that as many of these as possible come to Huntingdonshire.

“There are already a whole host of events being planned across our area to celebrate both the Olympic Torch passing through and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and I have been in discussions with Councillor Jason Ablewhite, Executive Leader of Huntingdonshire District Council and Council officers at HDC on how we can maximise the potential for local involvement in these momentous events.

“Furthermore, a number of local businesses are involved in providing services and products for the Olympics which will help the local economy. Only last week I was pleased to welcome Cabinet Minister Francis Maude to Spearmark International, a St Neots company that has won a branded products contract for the Olympic Games.”
