Jonathan Djanogly MP: Business boosting projects shared at national market towns event

27th March 2013

Towns are creating their own strategies to deal with challenging conditions affecting their high streets and town centres - and they recently shared some of these ideas with Members of Parliament at a special Parliamentary reception.

The event, organised by national charity Action for Market Towns and hosted by Jonathan Djanogly MP showcased towns' award-winning projects that have boosted their local businesses and shops, attracted new visitors, and provided new facilities and activities for their members. MPs from all over the UK attended to learn more about these ‘exemplary’ projects - and see if their ideas could be used to benefit their own towns and high streets.

Angela Dickinson and Julia Papworth of St Ives Town Initiative and Katie Williams, St Neots Town Centre Manager joined their MP, Jonathan Djanogly, alongside Directors of Action for Market Towns and other MPs and Peers in the House of Commons to discuss best practice.

Jonathan Djanogly said:

“We know that towns and high streets are facing tough conditions and challenges. But they're not sitting back and waiting for a solution to save them. Innovation, self-reliance and creativity are at the heart of many towns. As Government continues to wrestle with its strategies of how to support towns and high streets, it is hugely beneficial to be able to hear about some of the successful ideas that towns have used to give their communities and businesses a boost. I hope the MPs that attended will take these ideas back to their own towns and share them.”
