International Women’s Day Celebrated in Parliament

21st March 2012

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatrical performances, fashion parades and more.

The APPG for Women in Parliament asked all MPs to invite a young woman from their constituency to shadow them in Parliament for the day to support the theme ‘Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures’ on International Women’s Day (IWD). This was an opportunity for MPs to inspire girls who are interested in politics or taking a leading role in the community.

Local schoolgirl Danielle Belbin spent the day in Parliament shadowing her MP Jonathan Djanogly. Danielle attended Ministerial meetings at the Ministry of Justice with Jonathan, watched the International Women’s Day debate in the Chamber of the House of Commons and saw how Jonathan’s Parliamentary office is run. By kind permission of the Speaker, Rt Hon. John Bercow MP, Danielle and the other participants also took afternoon tea in Speaker’s House which provided a chance for the participants to connect with each other and swap inspiring stories of their experiences in Parliament.

Jonathan Djanogly said, ‘I believe it is important to give young people an insight into politics, to show them how relevant it is for their everyday lives and I hope that Danielle’s experience in Parliament will have inspired her.’
