Huntingdon Conservatives Special General Meeting

10th July 2009

Last night, Jonathan Djanogly released this press statement following the Huntingdon Conservatives Special General Meeting.

Earlier this evening I spoke to the members of the Huntingdon Conservative Association and then took questions.

We covered a significant number of issues including my, the Party's and Parliament's position on allowances and proposals to reform the system and introduce constitutional reform.

There was a consensus that this is vital in order that we can regain the public's trust and confidence in Parliament.

My association chairman, Martin Stephenson, read to the meeting a letter of support for me and recognition of my front bench contribution, which he received today from David Cameron.

With regards to the Daily Telegraph story, I explained that my claims were made within the law and the rules of the second home allowance scheme. Indeed, I have never claimed for childcare but only for the cleaning costs of my Huntingdon home. My [then] cleaner has signed a written statement confirming she was only employed as a cleaner at my constituency home between October 2007-November 2008.

I also decided to voluntarily repay a significant amount to the Parliamentary authorities in recognition of my part in Parliament's collective failure to address the expenses system.

I was extremely pleased with the overwhelming support that my Association has shown. This means a lot to Rebecca and me.

The meeting came to a close through discussion of how we as a local Association, can now move forward and play our part in getting rid of this failing and discredited government.

There is much work to be done and I am very ready, working with my local members, to play my part in securing a Conservative victory at the fast approaching general election.
