Alconbury - Airport is a No Go announces Department for Transport

16th December 2003

The concept of Alconbury as a specialist freight facility attracted little support

Jonathan Djanogly, the Member of Parliament for the Huntingdon Constituency, welcomed the announcement by the Secretary of State for Transport today that the plans for an airport at Alconbury would not now being going ahead.

Then conclusions in the "Future of Air Transport" announcement state:

"We do not support development of Alconbury for passenger or freight services, but we recognise the potential for relocation there of aircraft maintenance operations from Cambridge Airport."

The announcement also noted:

"The concept of Alconbury as a specialist freight facility attracted little support, especially from within the industry."

Mr Djanogly said:

"This announcement confirms my own findings that, whilst there is little local support for an airport, at the same time there has been little or no interest from the airport operators and carriers in flying passengers or freight from Alconbury.

Our attention can now concentrate on the Alconbury Development Limited application, which was successful on appeal last week subject to significant conditions, to provide warehousing and industrial facilities on the site."
